Cinco de Mayo at Palo Alto Sol

We sank into some mayo drinks at Palo Alto Sol, a local Mexican eatery and bar in Palo Alto, California. They have a large selection of Margaritas to try on their menu, all are strong enough to knock you off your feet (good thing we walked there!). Surprisingly not that busy for Cinco de Mayo, but I suppose it was a Sunday night.

Lauren:
I tried the Master Marg (we're friends, I can call her that).  It wasn't margarita, it was marg-a-mazing!  Had some hints of smokeyness and vanilla and I think that it was one of the best margaritas I have ever had.  I give this a solid 9.5 out of 10 limes.  I don't think that I can ever award a 10 after this drink.

My first (intended to be the only) drink of the night was the smoked mezcal margarita.  I would recommend this for fans of mezcal (sometimes I am in the mood).  In my opinion this was a solid marg with a twist, so if you are looking for something different would definitely recommend.  7.5 out of 10 limes.

Simon:
My first drink was the X-Rated Margarita, it was brimming with flavor and sweetness (I guess I have a thing for pink drinks?!).  The drink contained a sweet liqueur flavored with passion fruit, pineapple and more. I think this drink was a little too far on the sweet side for my taste, but if you object to the flavor of alcohol or find sweet and sour too pucker this may be the drink for you. It's definitely nice to have a sweeter option on the list of pucker filled margaritas. A sugar rim might have been a nice touch here. I would give this drink a 5 out of 10 olives, more original than the other drinks on the menu, and a good option for those who like the sweeter side of life.

For my second drink, I had the Los Altos, a standard margarita made with artisan, stone ground agave tequila. I wouldn't say it was that different than a standard margarita, but like all their drinks, it packed in the tequila. This margarita was quite smooth, not overly alcohol tasting but could have done with a bit more lime flavor (took me forever to dredge up the lime and squeeze it!). The price is the same as the standard margarita, so I would go ahead and order it just to be artisan, however, when I go back I will definitely be ordering Lauren's drink The Master, that was incredibly well nuanced and delicious. I'll give the Los Altos a solid 6 of 10 olives.

Drinking + Writing: What could go wrong? The Menlo Tavern!

For Cinco de Mayo eve (AKA "quatro de mayo"), we will be reviewing some signature cocktails at the recently remodeled and re-branded Menlo Tavern. Inside the Stanford Park Hotel in Menlo Park California, this busy little bar plays host to a large and very descriptive menu . Down to the drinks: We both chose to order pink sweet cocktails, our bad.  Although this menu boasted several choices of cocktails (for a variety of tastes) we can only drink and spend so much... unfortunately!  At least we got our share of fruits and veggies with these cocktails. Lauren: I ordered "Brookfarm's Finest" which included: hendricks gin, lemon juice, beet syrup, soda, lemon, fresh rosemary (all lowercase according to the menu).  I don't personally know Brookfarm, but, if this is his "finest" I don't want to continue the relationship.  The drink was basically a watered down beet syrup, with a little alcohol, and a shrub of rosemary sprouting out of the top (t...
